You know where you want to go, and what you want to see and do; now it's time to start making those all-important campground reservations. The most convenient way is to book online at a camping reservation website. Simply select the state you want, the nearest city, or even the name of the campground. Easy enough.

Then it can get a little confusing.

In the list of campsites unfamiliar icons and symbols may appear next to each listing: tiny images of dogs, electrical plugs or lightning bolts (some with a number next to them), wheelchairs, and the like.

You may also notice exotic phrases like 'primitive,' 'full hookups,' 'vault toilet,' 'loop,' 'pull through,' 'driveway surface,' 'accessible' and others.

1. The true luxury supplied by places with full hookups usually make sure they are the initial acne to arrange awake if goes made available. As you might assume, this high level of need does mean several RV areas recharge more for web sites with complete hookups. Nightly and month-to-month rates can differ a lot from location-to-location.
2. So, what is a full hookup campsite? A full hookup campsite is a site that will have access to all the amenities to hook to your motorhome or travel trailer. These amenities include a hookup for your water lines, a hookup for your electricity. This will include a 50 amp service, 30 amp service or both. Also, there is usually at least one 110v.

Then there's the map of the campground. It shows tiny drawings of tents, trailers and motorhomes; plus someone taking a shower, and water faucets.

RV camping without a sewer hookup is all about water conservation. If you limit yourself to using only the water in your fresh water tank, this will probably be fairly easy because your fresh water tank capacity will never exceed your grey and black tank holding capacity. Keep in mind that your grey tank will be the first to fill up.

Now you start to wonder: What kind of campsite should you get? How far from the lake is it? Will your RV fit? What about water and electricity? Where are the restrooms? Are there restrooms?

The last thing you need is to pull up to a campground with your tow vehicle and 25-foot trailer, only to discover that you accidentally reserved a tent site with no adjacent parking. You've got no shade, no water, no power. Worst of all, there's not enough room for your trailer and your SUV. And there are no other sites available.

The best way to avoid that scenario is to know what you're getting into. Here's a list of campground symbols, and their descriptions, to help ensure you reserve the right spot:

Campsite Search Listing

Site #—The number of a specific campsite.

Loop—Since the roads in most campgrounds are narrow, their campsites are arranged on one-way loops to keep traffic flowing. The loops have names or numbers for easy identification. If there's only one loop, then no name or number is given.

Site Type—Indicates the level of creature comforts available, from absolutely none (often listed as 'primitive'), to 'standard' (usually a paved or graded drive, picnic table and fire ring), or 'premium' (paved, picnic table, fire ring, electricity, water, sewer). These designations may vary from one reservation system to another.

Max # of People—The maximum number of campers that can stay in one campsite, based on its size. You don't want 15 friends trying to squeeze into a site designed for four people.

Equip Length/Driveway—The combined length of a tow vehicle and trailer or a motorhome that can be accommodated. For tent sites, the driveway length may be shown as '0' (zero), meaning that there is no parking space immediately adjacent to the site, although it is usually nearby. In the example above, '35 Back-In' means the driveway is 35 feet long and you back into it.

Amenities—Icons will indicate if there is electrical power and how many amps (usually 15, 30 or 50); hookups for water, electricity and sewer ('FULL' indicates all three); if the site is near water; and if pets are allowed.

Campground Amenities—Can indicate if there are campsites available for campers with disabilities, if there is fishing, and whether or not the campground has fire rings, restrooms, showers, hiking trails or a visitor center.

Other Mysterious Phrases

Accessible Flush Toilets—For disabled campers.

Accessible Sites—Sites designed to accommodate disabled campers.

Dump Station—Where wastewater from RVs is dumped. Potable water for freshwater tanks or containers may also be available at or near the actual dump location.

Group—A large common area where many RVs can gather.

Group Horse—A large group area without individual sites, specifically for horseback riders and their steeds.

Group Tent—Aame as above, only for large groups in tents.

Partial Hookup—A site with water and electricity but no sewer.

Pull Through—A campsite where you can pull your rig through instead of backing in.

Season—The time of year that the campground is open.

'Vault' or 'Pit' Toilet—Non-flushing toilet, quaintly known as an 'outhouse.'

Wooded Site—Describes a campsite where trees provide shade most of the day.

Once you get the hang of all the campground symbols, you should be able to make your next campsite reservation in a snap.

A month ago I was talking to a friend of mine who revealed to me she had recently “hooked up” with a guy. I was quick to assume sex but then stopped myself. My friend wasn’t someone who normally had one-night stands, so maybe she meant making out? Maybe with some touching? Was it just sleeping side-by-side with a little bit of canoodling? Was it hugging and then sharing a plate of fajitas?

The idea of trying to figure out what exactly my friend meant got me wondering if I even knew what hooking up meant anymore. When I was in high school, hooking up meant kissing. When I was in college, it meant sex. But now? I wasn’t sure.

It turns out I’m not alone. Google “what does hooking up mean” and you’ll find a slew of articles trying to decipher just that.

One study from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found that, while 94 percent of the college students involved in the survey were familiar with the term “hooking up,” there was no consensus about what it meant. Over 50 percent described it as involving sex, nine percent said it didn’t include sex, while one-third said it was “ambiguous.” No kidding.

Another study noted that “some students… feel that ‘hooking up’ generally refers to ‘having sex’; however, many others indicated that when they say ‘hooking up’ they are referring to something less than intercourse. To some it means ‘just kissing’ or ‘making out’…’fooling around’ beyond kissing, which includes sexual touching on or underneath clothing. Still others suggested that hooking up means ‘everything but’ intercourse.”

To make things even more confusing, an informal poll conducted this year in the Cavalier Daily asked, “What does the phrase ‘hook up’ mean?” Half of the 118 respondents said it meant “making out” while 43% said it meant “hand stuff.” Sixty-six percent agreed it involved sex.

So, basically, hooking up means some sort of physical intimacy but just what it entails is entirely up to the two individuals involved. What most people can probably agree upon is that hooking up usually occurs between two people who aren’t in a committed relationship. Let’s face it: no one says, “I hooked up with my boyfriend last night.” Which means that no matter what goes on during a hook up, it’s almost always based on the lack of a commitment and emotional investment. Maybe.

Because here’s the rub. As one 2013 study points out, because “the precise elements that define a hookup differ, in some cases quite radically, depending on the eye of the beholder…it is possible that for college students this can lead to mismatched expectations regarding sexual activity and commitment which in turn could lead to negative outcomes.”

My friend’s latest hook-up could attest to this conundrum. She had feelings for this guy, they hooked up, and she was left wondering, “Now what?” Were they a couple? Were they exploring a relationship? Or was it really just a one-night stand?

While we might not be able to pinpoint what hooking up means, we can agree that its ambiguity is a direct correlation between the two people involved. While a clear definition of a hook up might not exist, it’s safe to say that it entails sexual activity between two people who are not in a committed relationship.

Hooking up can be fun and exciting. If you want to make out or sleep with that new connection, then, by all means, do what feels right for you. But it’s important to remember that even though the definition of hooking up is unique to your situation, the consensus of what it is not is pretty clear: a relationship. Which means no matter how much you might like this person, hooking up with them doesn’t mean you’re headed for coupledom or ever will be. It’s food for thought for those who might wonder if having sex with their crush actually means anything more because chances are, it might not.
